A 2004 Social Accounting Matrix for Israel: Documentation of an Economy-Wide Database with a Focus on Agriculture, the Labour Market, and Income Distribution AgEcon
Siddig, Khalid H.A.; Flaig, Dorothee; Luckmann, Jonas; Grethe, Harald.
This document describes the Israeli Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) for the year 2004, developed by the Agricultural and Food Policy Group at the University of Hohenheim. The SAM is a part of a larger research project which aims to analyse several economic, trade, and labour policies in the context of economic integration of agriculture between Israel and the West Bank. Data are obtained from various sources in Israel. Sources include the Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics (ICBS), the Central Bank of Israel (CBI), and the Israeli Tax Authority (ITA). Data from sources outside of Israel are used to fill-in some gaps in the domestic reports. External sources include the World Trade Organization (WTO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and...

A MALDI-TOF MS database for fast identification of Vibrio spp. potentially pathogenic to marine mollusks ArchiMer
Moussa, M.; Cauvin, E.; Le Piouffle, A.; Lucas, O.; Bidault, Adeline; Paillard, Christine; Benoit, F.; Thuillier, B.; Treilles, M.; Travers, Marie-agnes; Garcia, Celine.
In mollusk aquaculture, a large number of Vibrio species are considered major pathogens. Conventional methods based on DNA amplification and sequencing used to accurately identify Vibrio species are unsuitable for monitoring programs because they are time-consuming and expensive. The aim of this study was, therefore, to develop the MALDI-TOF MS method in order to establish a rapid identification technique for a large panel of Vibrio species. We created the EnviBase containing 120 main spectra projections (MSP) of the Vibrio species that are potentially responsible for mollusk diseases, comprising 25 species: V. aestuarianus, V. cortegadensis, V. tapetis and species belonging to the Coralliilyticus, Harveyi, Mediterranei, and Orientalis clades. Each MSP was...

A web-based bioinformatics interface applied to the GENOSOJA project: databases and pipelines Genet. Mol. Biol.
Nascimento,Leandro Costa do; Costa,Gustavo Gilson Lacerda; Binneck,Eliseu; Pereira,Gonçalo Amarante Guimarães; Carazzolle,Marcelo Falsarella.
The Genosoja consortium is an initiative to integrate different omics research approaches carried out in Brazil. Basically, the aim of the project is to improve the plant by identifying genes involved in responses against stresses that affect domestic production, like drought stress and Asian Rust fungal disease. To do so, the project generated several types of sequence data using different methodologies, most of them sequenced by next generation sequencers. The initial stage of the project is highly dependent on bioinformatics analysis, providing suitable tools and integrated databases. In this work, we describe the main features of the Genosoja web database, including the pipelines to analyze some kinds of data (ESTs, SuperSAGE, microRNAs, subtractive...

An overview of invasive plants in Brazil Rev. Bras. Bot.
Zenni,Rafael Dudeque; Ziller,Sílvia Renate.
Alien plants are known to occur in Brazil since the 18th century when African grasses started to be recorded in pastures near Rio de Janeiro. In the beginning of the 19th century two royal decrees (July, 1809 and July, 1810) offered grants and tax exemption to everyone who would introduce plants of economic value. Nowadays, there are 117 plant species recognized as invasive or established and with invasive potential in Brazil and an unknown number of introduced plant species. Some of the most pervasive invasive species are Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. and Hedychium coronarium König in tropical ombrophilous forest, Hovenia dulcis Thunb. in subtropical ombrophilous forest and subtropical semi-deciduous forest, Pinus taeda L. and Pinus elliottii Engelm. in...

Availability of data for the Black Sea climate change research IBSS Repository
Vladymyrov, V..
This review presents a brief analysis and sources (including URLs for the Internet sources) of the most interesting and informative Black Sea oceanographic data sets (excluding satellite data) that are now available for the scientific community with the main attention on the long term data sets. The results of the analysis show that a number of the available Black Sea datasets is growing permanently. However, this process is still rather slow and insufficient. One can hope that new international projects that cover the Black Sea region will drastically improve the situation in nearest years. The attempts should be made as well to create the united reliable quality checked data time series especially for biological data for which long time series do not...

Within the European water framework directive (WFD), the status assessment of littoral waters is based both on the chemical quality and on the ecological quality of each water body. Quality elements enabling to assess the ecological status of a water body are, among other things, biological quality elements (phytoplankton, macroalgae, angiosperms, benthic invertebrates, fish), for each of which member states have developed quantitative indicators. This document compiles three deliverables of a multi-annual study intended to characterize the sensitivity of these biological indicators regarding the various anthropogenic pressures exerted on the French Atlantic and Channel coast: ultimately, the goal is to establish a quantitative and predictive relationship,...

Effects of Ignoring Survey Design Information for Data Reuse ArchiMer
Foster, Scott D.; Vanhatalo, Jarno; Trenkel, Verena; Schulz, Torsti; Lawrence, Emma; Przeslawski, Rachel; Hosack, Geoffrey R..
Data are currently being used, and reused, in ecological research at an unprecedented rate. To ensure appropriate reuse however, we need to ask the question: “Are aggregated databases currently providing the right information to enable effective and unbiased reuse?” We investigate this question, with a focus on designs that purposefully favour the selection of sampling locations (upweighting the probability of selection of some locations). These designs are common and examples are those designs that have uneven inclusion probabilities or are stratified. We perform a simulation experiment by creating datasets with progressively more uneven inclusion probabilities, and examine the resulting estimates of the average number of individuals per unit area...

Establishing a benefits transfer database for biosecurity decision making an indigenous biodiversity AgEcon
Bell, Brian A.; Cudby, Charlotte; Yap, Michael.
An imbalance of quantitative information on pest and disease impacts hampers biosecurity decision-making; there is relatively good information about impacts on industry, but relatively poor information about how society values the impacts on indigenous biodiversity. A benefits transfer process based on a database of choice experiments could help to redress this imbalance. This paper: briefly reviews four choice experiments that will be the foundation of a database; reviews benefit transfer literature; and sets out framework ideas for a Decision Support System (DSS), which will incorporate biodiversity values via a process for benefit transfer to facilitate more informed biosecurity decisions.

Exploration fonctionnelle de gènes différentiellement exprimés entre les souches d'huîtres creuses Crassostrea gigas résistantes et sensibles à la mortalité estivale ArchiMer
Fleury, Elodie.
This work contributed to the development of specific genomic tools for the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, aiming to identify molecular markers associated with summer survival of this species. To do so, 29745 ESTs obtained from different sequencing programs were grouped in a unique database. 9058 unigenes have been used to produce a cDNA microarray, to compare lines selected to be Resistant (R) or Sensitive (S) to summer mortality. 34 genes were observed as differentially expressed before the mortality event. Most of these genes are associated with reproduction and oxidative stress. This underlines the implication of the cost of reproduction and the importance of oxidative stress defenses in development of an immune weakness before the mortality event....

Filling gaps in species distributions through the study of biological collections: 415 new distribution records for Neotropical Cryptinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Santos,Bernardo F.; Hoppe,João Paulo M..
ABSTRACT Filling gaps in species distributions is instrumental to increase our understanding of natural environments and underpin efficient conservation policies. For many hyperdiverse groups, this knowledge is hampered by insufficient taxonomic information. Herein we provide 415 new distribution records for the parasitic wasp subfamily Cryptinae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonidae) in the Neotropical region, based on examination of material from 20 biological collections worldwide. Records span across 227 sites in 24 countries and territories, and represent 175 species from 53 genera. Of these, 102 represent new country records for 74 species. A distinct "road pattern" was detected in the records, at least within Brazil, where 50.2% of the records fall within 10...

Gender and age differences in polysomnography findings and sleep complaints of patients referred to a sleep laboratory BJMBR
Silva,A.; Andersen,M.L.; De Mello,M.T.; Bittencourt,L.R.A.; Peruzzo,D.; Tufik,S..
Our objective was to examine the effet of gender on the sleep pattern of patients referred to a sleep laboratory. The data (questionnaires and polysomnographic recordings) were collected from a total of 2365 patients (1550 men and 815 women). The polysomnography permits an objective assessment of the sleep pattern. We included only polysomnography exams obtained with no more than one recording system in order to permit normalization of the data. Men had a significantly higher body mass index than women (28.5 ± 4.8 vs 27.7 ± 6.35 kg/m²) and had a significantly higher score on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (10.8 ± 5.3 vs 9.5 ± 6.0), suggesting daytime sleepiness. Women had a significantly higher sleep latency than men, as well as a higher rapid eye movement...

Genetic catalogue, biological reference collections and online database of European marine fishes ArchiMer
Bautista, José M.; Verrez-bagnis, Veronique; Kourti, Naouma.
Taxonomy and systematics of most animal species have been described in sufficient detail to permit the classification of practically any organism and, in particular, may be of use in the identification of the species and subspecies for the fish trade and ecological concerns regarding fisheries. However, before FishTrace started there was a lack of fast reference tools that hindered the efficient identification and differentiation of teleosts required in fisheries management, biological and ecological research, and human consumption. This problem could affect several of the socio-economic activities related to Fisheries Policies and therefore, the constitution of a database for identification of fish species of commercial, ecological and zoological interest...
